What is a silt fence?

A silt fence is a temporary barrier made of sediment-blocking fabric that is used to control sediment run-off and erosion on construction sites. It is typically installed along the perimeter of a site to prevent sediment-laden water from leaving the site and entering nearby water bodies. Silt fences are designed to slow water flow, trap sediment, and allow water to filter through while retaining the sediment. They are typically made of geotextile fabric and supported by wooden or metal stakes. Silt fences are relatively easy to install and can be an effective erosion control measure when properly maintained.
